Hôtel de Glace stands at Valcartier, north of Québec City, and is raised from snow and ice every winter to a fresh design. It lasts one season only: the walls go up in late autumn, the building opens in the deep of winter, and the whole of it melts away in spring. Nothing is carried over to the following year.
Inside are vaulted corridors, sleeping chambers, a chapel and a bar, all cut from packed snow and fitted with clear ice. Beds sit on ice bases under insulating mats and cold-weather sleeping bags. Icehotel
Jukkasjärvi, Sweden
Icehotel stands at Jukkasjärvi in Swedish Lapland, beside the Torne River, whose ice is cut in spring and stored for the next build. The winter building is raised again every year from snow and river ice, opens around midwinter, and is left to melt back into the river when the season closes. The site has been rebuilt in this way for decades.
Art suites are carved by invited artists, so each chamber differs from the last, and simpler ice chambers stand alongside them. Beds rest on ice bases under hides and sleeping bags. A separate cooled building on the site is held cold through the year, while heated rooms, a restaurant and warm washing facilities stand nearby.
Ask the operator which parts are open on your dates, since the seasonal halls and the year-round cooled building follow different calendars. Clothing for the cold, luggage storage and the arrangements for a night in a chamber are all worth settling in writing beforehand.

Iglu-Dorf Zermatt

Iglu-Dorf Zermatt is a village of snow domes on a mountain shoulder high above Zermatt, in the Valais. It is a separate upland site of the operator, apart from the town, and it is dug out and shaped again every winter. What stands one season is gone by the next, and the layout changes with it.
The domes hold sleeping chambers of several sizes, a bar and a shared dome, with sheepskins, insulating mats and cold-weather sleeping bags on the sleeping platforms. Washing facilities are simple and shared. A heated service building and an outdoor hot tub stand beside the village while the season lasts, and are taken away with it.
Access depends on the weather and on the mountain lifts running, and the operator can close the site at short notice. Ask them directly about this season's dates, about reaching the village and about what to bring. Nothing here should be read as advice about the way up.
